The amount of solar energy generated by businesses has increased in recent years. The potential of commercial rooftops is significant, yet a large portion remains untapped. With solar panels on your business premises, you can make a major contribution to a better environment. On top of that, there are also many benefits for your business. In this article, we outline them for you.

1. Save on your business energy bill

Energy costs for commercial properties can be substantial. Solar panels are the ideal way to reduce your electricity expenses. The energy you generate with solar panels on your company’s roof can be used directly within your business, which lowers your monthly energy bills. From the moment your panels are installed, you start saving. And once the investment has been recouped, you can enjoy pure profit for years to come.

2. Energy label and property value

When selling, renting, or delivering a commercial property, a valid energy label is required. This label indicates the energy performance of the building, ranging from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). Installing solar panels improves your property’s energy label. As of 2023, all offices in the Netherlands larger than 100 m² are required to have at least an energy label C. A higher label also increases the property’s value.

3. Corporate social responsibility

The climate crisis is becoming increasingly urgent. By installing solar panels on your business premises, you contribute to a better environment. It also enhances your company’s image. More and more people realize they can make a difference by consuming more consciously. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is therefore becoming increasingly important. Sustainable entrepreneurship plays a key role in this. Solar panels contribute to a sustainable business by reducing CO₂ emissions. It’s a clear way to show that your company cares about the planet.

4. Tax advantages and subsidies

The government encourages sustainable business practices, which means solar panels offer your business financial benefits. If your company invests in reducing CO₂ emissions, you can apply for the Energy Investment Allowance (EIA), which allows you to deduct 41.5% of the investment costs from your taxable profit. There's also the Small-Scale Investment Deduction (KIA), applicable when investing between €2,200 and €300,000 in business assets—including solar panels. Additionally, general investment and VAT deductions may apply. Your business might also be eligible for the Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition Subsidy (SDE+). For conditions, check the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
