Solar panel weather May 2025
What was the weather like in the past month for the solar panels? What does that say about the yield? And how does it compare to previous years?May 2025 was a nice end to a sunny spring. With 290 hours of sunshine, the month was a lot sunnier than average, which came on top of the already very sunny months of March and April. In this article, we take stock of the abundant sunshine of the past three months, with the associated negative electricity prices that occurred twice in May.

The rains finally arrived
In the North it was slightly sunnier than in the South: in Eelde, near Groningen, they counted 300 hours of sunshine. But besides sunny, it was also worryingly dry in May. Fortunately, that changed somewhat at the very end of the month, with the first good rain showers in a very long time.
Electricity cheaper than gas
The sun provided a lot of clean electricity throughout the month, which in turn led to falling electricity prices. Both gas and electricity prices have fallen recently, but electricity has clearly become relatively cheaper than gas, as can be seen in the image below. The graph shows the monthly gas and electricity prices of the past two years according to EnergyZero, with May 2023 as a benchmark.

Although the prices of these two energy sources are moving up and down at the same time (because there are still many gas-fired power stations that produce electricity), we can see that the electricity price has clearly become a lot lower than the gas price (partly due to adjustments in excise duties). This means that it is becoming relatively cheaper to do the things that we used to do with gas, such as heating tap water and the whole house, with electricity. And as you know, Zonnefabriek has a number of great products on offer for this: heat pump boilers and air conditioners.
It looks like the weather will become a lot more ‘normal’ in the coming period, with a chance of a drop of rain every day. So get your umbrella out again and enjoy the freshened-up world outside!
