A checklist for solar panels for businesses and associations
Zonnefabriek understands how important it is to work with a reliable, certified partner to ensure your solar project runs smoothly.
With over 10 years of experience and thousands of residential installations under our belt, we also have extensive expertise in delivering successful large-scale projects. We’ve helped many SMEs and associations take meaningful steps toward sustainability with commercial solar panel installations.
Sustainability has always been important, but since July 1, 2019, the energy-saving obligation has made it a legal requirement. If your business uses more than 50,000 kWh of electricity or 25,000 m³ of natural gas annually, you are required to take energy-saving measures with a payback period of five years or less.
Zonnefabriek is happy to help you meet this obligation in the best way possible. What sets us apart is our continuous commitment to quality — not just in the products we use, but also in the way we work and the service we provide. Our experience has shown that quality and care deliver the best long-term results (and returns).

Our process
Below is an overview of our typical working process. The duration of each project may vary depending on your specific situation, but this illustration shows how the process ideally unfolds. We aim to complete your installation within three months.

Subsidies
There are several options available for receiving subsidies for solar panels as a business or organization. The most relevant subsidies for commercial solar installations include: Net metering (Salderen), EIA (Energy Investment Allowance), SDE++ (Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Production), KIA (Small-scale Investment Allowance), MIA & VAMIL (Environmental Investment Deduction and Arbitrary Depreciation of Environmental Investments, DEI+ (Demonstration Energy and Climate Innovation)
Net metering allows you to offset the electricity you return to the grid against what you consume from it, meaning you only pay for your net usage. This is governed by Dutch electricity law and handled by your energy provider.
The EIA (Energie-investeringsaftrek) can be considered a solar panel subsidy in the form of a tax deduction scheme. When entrepreneurs invest in energy-saving equipment and sustainable energy, this scheme offers immediate financial benefits. In addition to the regular depreciation of the asset, this subsidy allows businesses to deduct an additional amount from their taxable profit — in 2020, this was 45% of the investment.
The SDE++ subsidy (Stimulering Duurzame Energietransitie) is part of the Dutch Climate Agreement, which aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 49% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This subsidy is designed to support the cost-effective production of renewable energy and the application of CO₂-reducing technologies. It bridges the gap between the market price of sustainable energy and that of fossil energy. Companies in sectors such as industry, mobility, electricity, agriculture, and the built environment are eligible. The subsidy is granted for a period of 12 to 15 years.

The Small-scale Investment Allowance (KIA) is a tax deduction on profits, especially beneficial for companies with a small electricity connection. If you invest in business assets within a fiscal year, you may qualify for this deduction. The deductible amount depends on the total investment made during that year.
MIA and VAMIL are two separate schemes but are often used together. Both are based on the Environmental List, which contains all eligible environmentally friendly business assets.
-
MIA – Environmental Investment Deduction
This allows businesses to reduce their taxable profit. Up to 36% of the investment amount can be deducted, depending on the environmental impact and the availability of the specific business asset. -
VAMIL – Random Depreciation of Environmental Investments
The VAMIL scheme allows businesses to write off their investment at any chosen time. Accelerated depreciation can lower the fiscal profit for a specific year, reducing the amount of tax owed.
The DEI+ scheme supports pilot and demonstration projects that are innovative in nature.
-
Pilot projects are intended to test and improve a new technology in a real-world setup that represents practical application.
-
Demonstration projects are focused on investing in a production installation that remains in use after the subsidy-supported project has ended.
