Now that it appears that the high energy prices as a result of the war in Iran will last longer than initially hoped, we look at what you as an energy consumer can do about it. It's no fun to be at the mercy of a volatile market. Fortunately, we can significantly reduce our dependency with these three steps:
The war in the Gulf has a direct effect on the price of oil and gas. The price of electricity is also affected, but to a much lesser extent. This is because our electricity supply is increasingly decoupled from fossil fuels thanks to the large-scale deployment of solar panels and wind turbines. By shifting as much consumption as possible from fossil to electric, we save a lot of money. Think of: cooking on induction instead of gas; electric driving instead of petrol or diesel; and using air conditioners and heat pump boilers instead of gas for heating and domestic hot water.
While the electricity price remained more or less the same or even decreased (above), the price of gas rose sharply as a result of the conflict with Iran (below). So doing more with electricity and less with gas results in savings! (source: EasyEnergy)
Any energy you don't have to purchase is a bonus of course. Your roof is just sitting there: you can very easily turn it into a power plant. You don't need to worry about the price of solar panels nowadays; they have never been so cheap. Millions of people in the Netherlands now know from experience that solar panels are financially attractive and technically problem-free. If you don't have them yet, then it's time to get them, and if you have room for expansion, now is the right time.

Unfortunately, we cannot generate all the electricity we need ourselves. Especially in winter, we remain largely dependent on the grid. But we can optimize our consumption from the grid by responding to dynamic prices. By consuming electricity when no one else does, we benefit from the lowest possible prices. This of course only works if we can store that electricity in a home battery and use it when we want to. A home battery and a dynamic energy contract is therefore a perfect combination.
With a smartly controlled home battery, you only consume the cheapest electricity from the grid
