In times of international tensions and rising energy prices, we can fortunately count on the sun to provide us with free electricity. In March she did her best again and delivered an average of 212 hours of sunshine across the Netherlands according to KNMI, almost 50% more than normal (146 hours is the long-term average for March).

All of the Netherlands benefited from those extra rays of sunshine, but the South benefited slightly more than the North. Incidentally, although it was a 'very sunny' month according to KNMI, it was not as extremely sunny as last year.

Many people with a home battery hardly needed to rely on the grid anymore in March thanks to all that solar power, which has now become even more profitable.

Opportunities for trading as well

For people who trade with their home batteries on the imbalance market, March 2026 was not bad at all. The trading index was ultimately 42 for the month according to Frank Energie, and that's higher than in many of the preceding months.

Meanwhile on the EPEX spot market, the price differences between the highest and lowest daily rates also increased: this offers opportunities for those who use their home battery in combination with a dynamic energy contract.

We're now in daylight saving time again with increasingly longer days and more and more sun. For many, a wonderful period of grid independence has begun. Only around October do people with solar panels and batteries need to start worrying about the electricity price again: hopefully by that time it will have returned to calmer waters.
